Apple disrupted the traditional market of smart phone with iPhone, while created a new segment of computing devices with iPad. It developed iPad Mini to cater to the needs of the users who want tablets at portable size.
On the other hand, it’s proving very difficult for Microsoft to shift its focus from computers to portable devices like tablets and smartphones.
Its Surface Pro tablet was the first tablet with Windows 8 OS, but failed to clock sales against iPad and other affordable Android tablets.

But, it seems Microsoft is after the footsteps of Apple and gearing up for the mini version of Surface tablet called as Surface Mini according to rumors.
Apple also is developing the successor of iPad Mini to milk the success of its tablets. While still a rumor, which should be taken with a pinch of salt, we do a comparison of these upcoming devices
iPad Mini 2 will have the same screen 7.9 “ as of its predecessor but will be sporting a resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels, equating to pixel density of 324 ppi.
This will put it in the same league of other Apple devices which have retina display.In terms of design, it will be same as original iPad Mini though may get little thinner and lighter.
On the other hand, Microsoft Surface Mini will have a screen size of 8 “. But there are no details about its possible resolution.The design of Surface Mini is also expected to undergo serious changes since Microsoft Surface Pro suffered by thick chassis and had much weight (908 g).
iPad Mini 2 may be powered by Apple A5 processor or its newer iteration Apple A6X. It will have usual storage option of 32 GB, 64 GB and may also support 128 GB memory similar to iPad 4.
Surface Mini is rumored to be powered by Intel’s latest for resulting in better battery performance and powerful graphics. Just Like iPad Mini 2, Microsoft will offer several storage options from 32 GB to even 128 GB.
Apple is expected to announce update to its OS- iOS 7 in WWDC to be held in June. iPad Mini 2 will certainly be running on this platform which is supposed to be sporting a flatter design.
Surface Mini will be running on Windows RT platform which Microsoft has specifically designed for touchscreen portable devices.
Following Apple’s track record of launching devices after about a gap of 1 year, we expect iPad Mini 2 be unveiled in Q3 2013 since iPad Mini was launched in October 2012.
Contrary to iPad Mini 2, Surface Mini is expected to be launched soon at Build Conference by Microsoft to be held in June 2013.
