If you want to switch your web hosting to VPS, installing cPanel on VPS only takes few minutes. Don’t know what cPanel is? It’s a Linux-based control panel with graphical user interface to manage your web hosting. Instead of using command line, cPanel makes it very easy to manage.
cPanel gives you fully functional 15-day trial. For VPS, you can choose monthly or yearly contracts. Checkout their website for pricing information.
cPanel can be installed either on the VPS or dedicated servers. It only takes about 5 mins to complete the setup. It works on Linux based OS. CentOS is more preferable than other operating systems. You have the option to choose the platform for VPS.
This is the basic installation of WHM. Copahost has written more informative guide on how to configure cPanel in a new linux server including video tutorial for ease of understanding.
Step 1: Go to WHM Login
Enter your IP address to go to WHM login. You’ll get the licence agreement, read it and click “Yes” to continue.
Step 2: Enter Contact Information & Hostname
This step requires you to enter contact details for notifications, Hostname and DNS resolver. Except for the contact details, the server information is automatically fetched by cPanel. Don’t change it unless you know what you are doing.
Step 3: Enter IP Addresses
This step requires you to enter two IP addresses. Again, cPanel will fetch this data automatically. If you don’t see the default IP address, contact your administrator to fix this error.
Step 4: Configure Nameservers
You need to enter at least 2 nameservers. Add “A” entries to point the nameservers to the IP address and click save. It will take less than a minute to configure.
Step 5: Configure FTP & Email
Now you need to configure FTP and Email settings. You can skip this step for default settings. For developers who need more add ons can customize accordingly. Leave it as default if you are not familiar with these settings.
One last step is to configure quota settings. You can leave it to “use file system quotas”. You will then see additional features to install. Leave them as default and click “Save Settings”. You can now see the new interface to configure server settings without command line.
Note: Once cPanel is installed, you cannot uninstall without reformatting the drive according to their FAQ’s. There are of course tutorials available to uninstall without formatting the disk.
